The recent death of Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has left Vietnam in mourning as thousands pay their final respects. Trong, who led the party since 2011, oversaw an anticorruption campaign and had remarkable longevity in office. His funeral ceremony and burial were attended by top officials from Vietnam, South Korea, China, Japan, and Cuba. All flags across the country flew at half-staff and entertainment and sporting events were suspended during the mourning period. Trong was praised by US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin for his diplomatic efforts, including his coined term “bamboo diplomacy”. With his passing, the stage is set for a leadership race at the National Party Congress in 2026. Trong was 80 years old and passed away in Hanoi last week, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered in Vietnam for years to come.
