‘El Chapo’s Son and Sinaloa Cartel Co-founder ‘El Mayo’ Taken into Custody in Texas

The son of infamous Sinaloa Cartel boss Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera, Joaquín Guzmán López, and cartel co-founder Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada García were arrested in El Paso, Texas, facing multiple charges related to the deadly fentanyl manufacturing and trafficking networks of the Mexico-based criminal organization. The Sinaloa Cartel, along with the Jalisco Cartel, are central to the synthetic drug crisis in the U.S., according to the DEA. The Justice Department, under Attorney General Merrick Garland, vows to hold all cartel leaders accountable for poisoning American communities with drugs like fentanyl. Other sons of “El Chapo,” including Ovidio Guzmán López, have also faced arrests and extradition to the U.S. for drug and money laundering charges. The cartel has been actively involved in distributing cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana in the U.S., according to indictments. An internal battle within the cartel involving the “Chapitos,” the four sons of “El Chapo,” has been ongoing, with Zambada García also facing charges for conspiring to distribute fentanyl. The DEA has noted the cartels’ involvement in producing and distributing fentanyl and methamphetamine, stating that their ban on trafficking fentanyl is likely a public relations stunt. With drug overdose deaths continuing to rise in the U.S., the DEA and Justice Department are working to dismantle these drug trafficking networks responsible for distributing lethal substances like fentanyl and methamphetamine.
