Australian field hockey star Matt Dawson sacrificed the top part of his right ring finger in order to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympics. He broke his finger during a training session in Perth and was faced with the choice of missing the games or amputating his finger in order to recover in time. Dawson chose to amputate his finger to ensure he could still compete. Despite concerns from his wife, he went through with the surgery and is now in Paris for his third Olympic appearance with the Kookaburras. The team is aiming for gold, with their last win in Athens in 2004 and a history of silver and bronze medals. Dawson believes that sacrificing part of his finger was a small price to pay for the chance at Olympic glory. He is determined to give his all on the field as he represents Australia in men’s field hockey.
