San Diego Padres’ Dylan Cease pitches team’s second no-hitter, secures 3-0 victory against Washington Nationals

Dylan Cease pitched a no-hitter for the San Diego Padres in a 3-0 victory over the Washington Nationals. Cease came close to a no-hitter in the past, falling one out short two years ago. This time, he achieved the feat, striking out nine and walking three in the process. The game included a rain delay and Cease threw a career-high 114 pitches. This was the second no-hitter in Padres history, with the first being pitched by Joe Musgrove in 2021. Cease had previously been one out away from a no-hitter with the Chicago White Sox.

Cease’s pitch count was high, but he lobbied his manager to stay in the game. The closest the Nationals came to a hit was in the fifth inning, but the catch was made in shallow center field. Cease used a combination of sliders, fastballs, and knuckle-curves to keep the Nationals off balance. Overall, he only allowed three baserunners in the game.

San Diego has now won five games in a row and completed their first series sweep on the road. Washington, on the other hand, was swept for the sixth time this season and finished winless in six games against San Diego. The Padres loaded the bases in the first inning, scoring all three runs on a single by Ha-Seong Kim. The team is now looking ahead to their series against Baltimore, while the Nationals will be sending MacKenzie Gore to the mound in their next game against St. Louis.
