Kamala Harris overwhelmingly endorsed by Michigan delegates

Michigan delegates at the Democratic National Convention have overwhelmingly voted to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s new nominee for president. The vote came following President Joe Biden’s announcement that he was dropping his bid for reelection and endorsing Harris. Michigan Democrats see this vote as a strong show of support for Harris, with Chair Lavora Barnes highlighting her advocacy for reproductive rights, workers’ rights, and the middle class.

Harris, a former U.S. senator from California, has received widespread endorsements and support from Democratic delegates across the country, as the party rallies around her following Biden’s decision. The vote from Michigan delegates, consisting of about 98% in favor of Harris, signals significant backing for her candidacy. However, two uncommitted delegates voted against endorsing Harris, calling for her to address the issue of the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

Despite differences in opinion among delegates, the overwhelming majority has expressed support for Harris. Delegates like Abbas Alawieh, who raised concerns about the conflict in Gaza, were met with resistance during the meeting. Michigan Democrats are now looking to Harris to engage with delegates on important issues and garner support from the party base for the upcoming convention in Chicago. Harris’s nomination will require the backing of about 2,000 delegates nationally, with Michigan contributing around 140 delegates to the process.
