State Rep. Kimberly Edwards, a Democrat, is facing two challengers in the Aug. 6 primary for the redrawn 12th District seat that now covers parts of Macomb and Wayne counties. Edwards, who narrowly won her first term in 2022 in the old 12th District, is now up against Patrick Biange, an agricultural inspector, and Angela McIntosh, an insurance agency operator in the upcoming election. Another challenger, Randell Shafer, a Republican retiree and veteran, is also competing.
In her first term, Edwards worked on legislation to improve foster children’s educational outcomes and protect coverage for those with pre-existing conditions. She also secured funding for lead water line replacement and expanded programming at a local Boys & Girls Club. If re-elected, she hopes to focus on water infrastructure, utility prices, mental health services, and addressing medical racism.
Biange, an Army veteran, aims to support small businesses in clean energy and technology sectors, while advocating for vocational training and small farming. McIntosh, a first-time candidate, prioritizes funding for education, job creation, mental health, and infrastructure projects, with a goal to address flooding in the suburbs.
Shafer, the only Republican candidate, is critical of Governor Whitmer’s policies and aims to bring a more balanced approach to government spending. He plans to address veterans’ issues and support businesses in Michigan. The winner of the primary will serve a two-year term in a Legislature with a narrow Democratic majority.
