The Modesto Bee’s series “Uniquely” highlights the moments, landmarks, and personalities that make living in the Central Valley special. Several celebrities have called Modesto home, including actors Jeremy Renner, Timothy Olyphant, George Lucas, and Ginger Gonzaga, as well as singer and actor Harve Presnell, and actor Janet Leigh.
Jeremy Renner, known for his role as Hawkeye in the Avengers franchise, attended Modesto schools before finding success in Hollywood. Timothy Olyphant, known for his roles in TV series like “Justified,” grew up in Modesto and still has family in the area. Filmmaker George Lucas, creator of Star Wars, has deep roots in Modesto and is honored throughout the city for his contributions to the entertainment industry. Ginger Gonzaga, who has appeared in various TV shows and movies, is a Modesto native who found her passion for acting while in college.
Harve Presnell, a Modesto High School graduate, was a successful Broadway actor and singer before his passing. Janet Leigh, best known for her role in “Psycho,” was born in Merced and raised in Stockton, starting her career in showbiz at a young age.
Other celebrities with ties to the Central Valley included “Glee” actor Dot-Marie Jones, “All My Children” star James Mitchell, “Gunsmoke” actor Dennis Weaver, and country music artist Roy Clark.
The series shines a light on the diverse talents and backgrounds of individuals who have made an impact on both the entertainment industry and the local communities where they grew up.
