Trump resumes campaigning in Michigan accompanied by his new running mate

Republican Donald Trump and his running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, will hold their first public campaign rally in Michigan since the assassination attempt against Trump. The rally is seen as an important event as Michigan is a crucial swing state that could determine the outcome of the election.

Trump narrowly won Michigan in 2016, but Democrat Joe Biden flipped it in 2020. With Vance by his side, Trump hopes to gain support among Rust Belt voters in states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Ohio. Vance, who emphasized his working-class roots during his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention, aims to connect with voters whose jobs were sent overseas and children were sent to war.

Democrats have dominated recent elections in Michigan, but Republicans see an opening as Biden faces calls to drop out of the race. Biden, currently isolating after being diagnosed with COVID-19, has insisted he is not dropping out and has criticized Trump’s acceptance speech for presenting a “dark vision for the future.”

The rally will take place in Grand Rapids, a historically Republican area that has trended Democratic in recent elections. Both campaigns are hoping to pick up voters who supported Nikki Haley in the Republican primary. U.S. Rep. Hillary Scholten, a Democrat representing Grand Rapids, is among the lawmakers calling on Biden to step aside after a poor debate performance. The rally is expected to draw a large crowd as Trump and Vance make their case to Michigan voters.
