On Friday, a massive IT outage caused chaos at airports worldwide, leading to long lines, crowded gates, and many cancellations and delays. In the U.S., Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, and New York’s LaGuardia Airport were among the most affected. Major airlines, including American, Delta, and United, issued ground stops in response to the outage. The Federal Aviation Administration reported extensive ground delays at various airports, with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta experiencing the longest delay time of 374 minutes. Microsoft, the source of the issue, confirmed that the problem was related to a defect in a content update affecting its cloud services and some third-party cybersecurity platforms. The outage also impacted businesses, police forces, public transport, and banks. Passengers faced significant wait times and confusion as they navigated the disrupted airport operations. In some cases, passengers had to wait several hours before their flights took off, causing frustration and disruptions to their travel plans. The situation also affected airports globally, including those in Paris, Canada, and Spain. While some systems were restored throughout the day, the overall impact of the outage continued to disrupt travel operations.
