Brittney Griner Encourages Evan Gershkovich to ‘Keep the Faith’ Amid Sentencing in Russia

WNBA star Brittney Griner, who was released from a Russian prison last year, offered words of encouragement to American journalist Evan Gershkovich, who was sentenced to 16 years in a maximum-security prison in Russia for espionage. Griner, who served time in a Russian penal colony, expressed empathy for Gershkovich and urged him to stay strong and not lose hope.

Gershkovich, who denied any wrongdoing, was found guilty in a case that his employer, The Wall Street Journal, and the U.S. government have criticized as a sham. Griner, who recently played in Russia’s women’s basketball league, was arrested in Moscow for possessing cannabis oil but was released after negotiations by the Biden administration.

Griner is now preparing for her third Olympics in Paris and expressed gratitude for her support system. Gershkovich, on the other hand, has been remanded into custody until his sentence can be legally enforced and is expected to cover legal fees. His defense team has 15 days to appeal the sentence.

Griner’s message to Gershkovich reflects her own experience in dealing with the Russian legal system and underscores the challenges faced by Americans in similar situations. The case highlights the ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Russia and the importance of diplomatic efforts in resolving such disputes.
