IBM has been approved as a new partner in the Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems Center (SQMS), a DOE National Quantum Information Science Research Center hosted by Fermilab. The collaboration aims to advance quantum technologies, focusing on superconducting quantum systems. SQMS, with over 30 partner institutions, brings together experts from around the world to drive advances in quantum information science.
IBM will focus on areas such as large-scale cryogenics, quantum interconnects, noise reduction in qubits, scientific applications of quantum computing, and quantum workforce development. The collaboration intends to develop technologies critical for scaling up quantum computers, including novel cryogenic solutions and high-quality interconnects for quantum computing platforms. It also aims to address noise sources in superconducting qubits and explore scientific applications of quantum computing for fields like condensed matter and high-energy physics.
Furthermore, SQMS and IBM plan to enhance quantum workforce development programs to attract and train the next generation of quantum experts. This collaboration is a significant step towards building a large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer. IBM’s participation in SQMS’s research is crucial for advancing the roadmap towards large-scale quantum computing. IBM and Fermilab are set to work together to drive scientific applications of quantum computing and develop a quantum-ready workforce.
The partnership is pending final approval of a legal agreement between IBM and Fermi Research Alliance, LLC. The collaboration between IBM and SQMS represents a major step forward in advancing quantum technologies and fostering the development of a skilled quantum workforce.
