Despite constant bombings by Israel, why do people in Gaza continue to seek shelter in schools?

At least eight UN-run schools serving as shelters for displaced Palestinians have been hit by Israeli attacks in the last 10 days, with a total of 120 educational institutions impacted since the conflict began. Families living in these shelters face overcrowded and unsanitary conditions, fatigue, and trauma. Despite the risks, many seek out these schools for relative safety. Humanitarian workers face challenges in providing supplies, with restrictions on movements and the safety of aid workers. The breakdown of law and order has led to instances of violence and gender-based violence within schools. Concerns are growing about the spread of waterborne diseases like cholera. Psychological support is crucial for those impacted, especially children who are the most affected by the conflict. People in these shelters believe that sheltering under the UN flag should provide safety, as international law states. UNRWA has faced challenges in providing aid and equipment to those in need. Displaced individuals face protracted forced displacement, with up to nine out of ten people in Gaza being displaced multiple times since the conflict began. The psychological impact of living in shelters amid the chaos and violence is severe, especially for children. Despite the hardships, those living in UNRWA schools feel fortunate compared to those living in plastic tents and sleeping on the sand.
