President Joe Biden stated in an interview with BET News that he would re-evaluate his decision to continue his campaign if a doctor told him he had a medical condition that would prevent him from being able to serve as president. Despite facing calls from other Democrats to drop out of the race due to his lackluster debate performance, Biden has dismissed these requests and insisted on continuing his campaign. He mentioned that Democratic leaders in Congress urged him to stay in the race, and he would only drop out if the Lord Almighty told him to.
During the interview, Biden appeared to have slipped-up multiple times, forgetting the names of figures such as former President Herbert Hoover and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. He also seemed to mistake the name of former President Donald Trump’s running mate. Despite receiving pushback over his appointments of black individuals to positions such as Secretary of Defense and Supreme Court Justice, Biden emphasized the importance of diversity in all aspects of American history.
Regarding abortion rights, Biden seemed to fumble the name of Senator JD Vance, attributing stances to “Mance” instead. He noted that different states have varying opinions on abortion laws, highlighting the need for exceptions in such legislation. Biden has faced scrutiny over his mental capabilities and age, with some calling for him to take a cognitive or neurological test. However, Biden has not committed to taking such a test, stating that he undergoes a full neurological test daily as part of his duties as president. He also acknowledged making a “serious mistake” during a recent debate but expressed a desire to continue working for the country.
