Startup to pilot Japanese vertical wind turbine technology on Maui islands: Maui Now

Kanoa Winds Inc., a Hawai‘i-based startup with ties to Japan, is set to bring innovative Japanese clean energy technology to Honolulu’s Kaka‘ako Makai area for research and demonstration purposes. In collaboration with the Hawai‘i Community Development Authority (HCDA), Kanoa Winds will install a 0.5 kilowatt Vertical Coaxial Contra-rotating Twin Blades (VCCT) wind turbine at the HCDA Entrepreneur Sandbox.

The VCCT wind turbine, which has been utilized successfully in Japan for over 15 years, is known for its ability to generate safe and clean wind power in densely populated areas. Notably, the technology has been endorsed by the Japan Falconiformes Center for its minimal impact on the environment and coexistence with birds.

One of the main advantages of VCCTs is their ability to generate power at a wider range of wind speeds compared to traditional horizontal-axis wind turbines. Kanoa Winds plans to conduct a comprehensive study of the technology near the Hawai‘i Technology Development Corporation Entrepreneur Sandbox, focusing on wind speed power generation, equipment load, stability tests, safety evaluation, wildlife impact, and environmental assessment.

The VCCT unit to be installed by Kanoa Winds will be shorter than a street light and occupy a footprint of approximately 24 square feet. This initiative represents an important step towards exploring new alternative energy sources for Hawai‘i’s clean energy future, demonstrating the company’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
