Authorities in Evanston, Illinois have recovered the body of a man from Lake Michigan near Dempster Street Beach. This comes after a week-long search for a 41-year-old swimmer who went missing in difficult conditions near Lighthouse Beach. The man’s body was discovered by a fishing charter two miles away from Dempster Street Beach early Saturday morning. The identity of the man is still unknown, pending identification from the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The swimmer was last seen on June 30 and was pulled underwater along with an adult woman and two teenage girls. The girls and the woman were rescued by a bystander, while recovery efforts for the missing man continued. The Evanston Fire Department used side sonar technology to search for the swimmer in challenging conditions with zero visibility on the water. Emergency personnel were on the scene at Lighthouse Beach searching for the missing swimmer, leading to the closure of the beach to the public.
Search efforts involved a Chicago Fire Department helicopter and a drone from the Evanston Fire Department. Residents and visitors were asked to avoid the Church Street boat ramp as additional search and rescue crews staged at that site. The recovery of the man’s body brings a tragic end to the search operation in Evanston.
