Modern twist on ancient tradition: Nighttime dragon boat racing in Taiwan

Dragon boat racing, a tradition in the Chinese diaspora for thousands of years, is seeing changes in central Taiwan. The races have been switched to the evening to avoid the intense sun and take advantage of cooler temperatures. LED lights now adorn the boats, creating a stunning sight as they glide over the water. Participants in this mainly amateur sport form crews among neighbors and co-workers, using training sessions to strengthen friendships. This year’s races hold special meaning as they mark the sport’s return after a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dragon boat races are also a popular event in Hong Kong, Macao, and mainland China, but safety standards have often been lax, leading to accidents. Despite challenges, participants see the races as a celebration of traditional Chinese culture and an opportunity to foster teamwork. The races are linked to the legend of Qu Yuan, an adviser to a Chinese emperor who drowned himself, with supporters tossing rice cakes into the river to prevent fish from eating his body.

While the sport has gained popularity worldwide, particularly during the summer solstice, participants in Taiwan and other regions are striving to preserve the traditions and cultural significance of dragon boat racing. As the sport evolves and adapts to modern times, the essence of teamwork, friendship, and cultural heritage remains at its core.
